After becoming fragile in Week 14, the market has displayed a distinct downward trend. All the same, demand has remained at a fairly good level. The weather has been cooler than normal for the season and still favourable for consumption, with competition from spring fruits remaining limited. However, arriving shipments have increased further, returning to a near-normal level in spite of the continued marked deficit in shipments from Costa Rica, a temporary dip in arrivals from Surinam and the beginning of a decrease in those from Africa. Arrivals from the French West Indies are still increasing. However, the main feature has been the continued increase in the volumes—very large—shipped from Ecuador (weather conditions are favourable for production and shipments have been concentrated on the northern EU at the expense of the Mediterranean). Prices have fallen in Germany. The worsening has been more marked on the other European markets (the United Kingdom, the new member states in the eastern part of the EU, Italy and France) that have sometimes been faced with unsettling spot market batches
