Completed Following a seminar for English-speaking participants from Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries on obsolete pesticides in Harare (Zimbabwe), 17-20 December 1996, a further workshop was arranged by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) for delegates from francophone, mainly West African, countries, in Dakar, 16-19 March 1999. The workshop was organised by Dr Alemayehu Wodageneh of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Plant Production and Protection Division, with Dr James Everts of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Project Locustox (Senegal) as local coordinator. With experience of assessing the environmental effects of heavy spillage from a destroyed store of obsolete pesticides, based on an Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) consultancy in Somalia's North-West Zone in March/April 1993, and having written the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) 'Pesticide Storage and Stock Control Manual' (1996), NRI were invited to contribute to the workshop in Dakar. 1. To give a presentation at the workshop entitled "Monitoring the spread of containment from heavy pesticide spillage".2. To contribute to accompanying workshop discussions. 1. Outline of the talk for inclusion in his report on the Workshop.2. Provide input to discussions at Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on environmental issues associated with pesticide use.3. Two further FAO workshops on obsolete pesticide stocks are being planned for North African and Middle Eastern countries, to which NRI has been invited to make a presentation; it is recommended that DFID are represented at the meetings.
