Completed The wider objectives of the project are to improve the living standards of resource-poor livestock owners by enhancing the introduction of more productive and environmentally sound agroforestry systems that integrate crops, pastures, trees and ruminants.The immediate objectives are:To review the literature to determine the technical and socio-economic advantages of adoption of agroforestry systems in smallholder animal agriculture .To identify constraints to adoption and areas for further research in the development of these systems.

"New Agriculture" is explained, with the features that allow it to reach the poorest farmers and assist poverty reduction strategies. The changing roles of R&D and Innovation Systems are discussed; capacities can be built into R&D organisations for innovation. A case study for the Ghibe Valley in Ethiopia is examined.

Completed The project extends a partnership, begun in 2003 / 2004, between the DFID-UK Livestock Production Programme (LPP) and Urban Harvest, the system-wide initiative of the CGIAR on urban and peri-urban agriculture, based at the International Potato Centre (CIP) Regional Office in Nairobi.

Current In Kampala, the urban authority has reviewed and passed new ordinances governing Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture and Livestock activities. User friendly guidelines based on these ordinances are being pilot-tested in selected communities by Kampala Urban Food Security, Agriculture and Livestock Coordinating Committee (KUFSALCC) under funding support from the Livestock Production Program of Natural resources International, to draw lessons for fully effecting the new policies.
