Local Participatory Research and Development on Urban Agriculture and Livestock Keeping in Nakuru
Completed The project extends a partnership, begun in 2003 / 2004, between the DFID-UK Livestock Production Programme (LPP) and Urban Harvest, the system-wide initiative of the CGIAR on urban and peri-urban agriculture, based at the International Potato Centre (CIP) Regional Office in Nairobi. The activity, led by Kenya Greentowns Partnership Association (Greentowns for short) advances the LPP pro-poor strategies of support for urban livestock keepers in sub-Saharan Africa, and forms a component of the Urban Harvest Regional Strategy for 2005-2007, addressing its programme goals on sustainable urban poor livelihoods, efficient nutrient cycling, local R&D, and stakeholder and policy dialogue. Through applied participatory research, it extends previous work of Greentowns and Urban Harvest in Nairobi on nutrient cycling by urban poor groups. It will also be incorporated into Doctoral studies by Urban Harvest staff member, Mary Njenga. It is expected that the Municipal Council of Nakuru will continue to apply the project results over time, in collaboration with its stakeholder group developed through the project.
