Symposium on Urban Agriculture
Completed This international symposium is organised by TRIALOG, Humbolt University and HABITAT, and aims to explore the link between urban agriculture researchers, practitioners, trainers and supporters, emphasising the integration of agronomic, socio-economic and planning, housing and landscape issues. The paper will draw on research work carried out in South Africa and Zimbabwe (EU 4th Framework funded project entitled Methodologies and Design criteria for Soil and Water Resource Management and Policy Formulation in Peri-urban Farming Systems in Southern Africa.). The paper will show the links between micro household level priorities and practices in urban agriculture and the meso and macro level planning and policy decisions. 1. To present a paper showing how poor urban households make use of natural resources as a component of their livelihoods and how planning policies have affected the development of urban agriculture in contrasting regions of Southern Africa.2. To discuss and promote the use of livelihood approaches as a means of developing mutual understanding and linkages between stakeholders in urban agriculture. 1. Progress against Milestones 2000/01:A paper was presented drawing on research work carried out in South Africa and Zimbabwe (EU 4th Framework funded project) showing how poor urban households use natural resources as a component of their livelihoods and how they have been supported or undermined by urban planning policies in contrasting regions of Southern Africa. The presentation of the paper at the symposium emphasised the value of livelihood approaches as a means of developing mutual understanding and linkages between stakeholders in urban agriculture.
