Senior Animal Production and Health Officer

Under the overall responsibility of the Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Asia and the Pacific and the technical guidance of the Director, Animal Production and Health Division (AGA), as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, the incumbent will:
assess the development trends in the livestock sector and its various sub-sectors from producer to consumer (commodity chain approach) and evaluate the likely socio-economic, animal and public health as well as environmental impacts of these trends;
lead, coordinate and conduct livestock sector reviews and policy formulation, in particular related to institutional reform, required to enable the region to achieve sector growth and to participate in international trade;
identify and develop strategies, design, formulate and implement livestock development programmes and projects in the region with emphasis on the livestock products supply chain and its safety and quality aspects;
develop capacity and institution building in the livestock sector, particularly related to animal health and livestock services, including coordinating and strengthening regional dimension of GF-TAD (Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases);
supervise, support and coordinate the implementation of FAO’s Field Programme as it relates to sustainable livestock development in the region, covering all aspects from production to consumption in various production systems, including support to the implementation of the Global Plan of Action on animal genetic resources in the region;
design and implement strategies for the development of entrepreneurship in small and medium-sized livestock-related business, including partnerships between public and private sectors, and NGOs active in the region;
provide technical guidance and backstopping for the formulation and implementation of emergency projects related to livestock in the region;
provide the units concerned at HQ, Regional and Subregional Offices with inputs for region-wide periodic planning and programming reviews and reports;
perform other related duties, as required.
