Under the overall supervision of the Deputy Regional Representative/Subregional Coordinator , SNO and the technical guidance of the Director, Plant Production and Protection Division (AGP), the incumbent will provide technical advice and support to matters related to the field of sustainable plant production to Member Countries in the region. Specifically to:
Provide guidance and support to governments and institutions in the identification, formulation and implementation of projects and programmes including support in capacity building and training, both at the national and regional levels in the fields of sustainable crop production intensification;
Identify plant production problems in the Region and provide technical support for the promotion of sustainable intensification practices;
Strengthen FAO Members’ capacity to deal with adverse effects of rangeland and grassland desertification, climate change, and loss of biodiversity with special focus on the small farmers and rural poor;
Design and conduct periodic reviews and appraisals of crop production in the Region, and advise FAO Members on necessary actions to implement crop production programmes;
Assist member countries in their active participation in development of sustainable practices, strategies, policies, methodologies and guidelines, through: i) participation in relevant meetings, ii) national and regional project development, iii) interaction and networking with FAO stakeholders (including international research and development institutions, national research and development institutions and universities, ministries of agriculture);
Work closely with the Regional Agricultural Organizations, regional and subregional economic and political organizations in the identification of priorities and definition of work programmes in the area of plant production;
Liaise with international and national research institutions for the transfer of research findings, and to meet needs at country and / or regional level;
Cooperate with the FAO headquarters in the, technical briefing and support of field project personnel dealing with plant production;
Provide information and support in exchange of information between countries, subregions and FAO headquarters on issues of sustainable production intensification;
Liaise closely with the technical staff at the Plant Production and Protection Division at headquarters on all matters related to plant production in the Region and ensure a timely exchange of relevant information with member countries;
Perform other related duties as required.
