Under the overall supervision of the Director and the direct supervision of the team leader on sustainable crop production intensification, the incumbent will contribute to FAO’s Strategic Objective A on sustainable crop production intensification focusing on provision of technical support to national programmes with principal emphasis on production systems and related issues, such as climate change, ecosystem services and biodiversity. In particular, will:
Serve as Secretary of the International Rice Commission;
Contribute to the provision of technical advice to FAO member countries on strategies/policies for sustainable crop production intensification, including of the rice-based cropping systems, in different agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions;
Contribute to the development of guidelines for and enhancement of national capacity in sustainable production systems in developing countries, using appropriate agricultural concepts such as Conservation Agriculture (CA);
Participate in the organization of consultation workshops for policy discussion and formulation on issues related to sustainable crop production intensification at international and regional levels;
Collect, analyse and disseminate through publication (electronic and hard copies) information on crop production systems and related aspects in major agro-ecosystems, with particular attention to needs of smallholder farmers;
Develop and maintain contacts with international and national academic, research and policy institutions to foster collaboration on the development and implementation of projects for the promotion of sustainable production intensification in FAO member countries;
Perform other related duties as required.
