Food Systems Economist (Trade and Food Security)
Under the overall managerial and administrative leadership of the ADG/Regional Representative of FAO’s Regional Office for the Near East (RNE), and the technical guidance of the Directors of the Trade and Markets Division (EST) and the Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA),
the Food Systems Economist (Trade and Food Security) will work as a member of RNE team of Technical Officers. She/he advises the Regional
Representative on matters related to food security and trade related aspects and lends support, as needed, to member countries as well as regional
organizations and bodies. Specifically he/she will carry out the following tasks:
? Provide technical analysis, advisory and support services to member states, regional institutions and stakeholders and FAO representations in
the areas of food security, prices, markets and trade as they relate to policies, programmes and capacity-building;
? Analyse and review the food security, price, markets’ and trade situation in the region, in close collaboration with the other technical officers in
RNE and at FAO HQ, and contribute to regular updates to inform member countries and other stakeholders on the emerging trends;
? Undertake analyses of food security and vulnerability, price, market and trade issues in the region, including assessments of implications of
existing and proposed trade agreements and social protection programmes;
? Participate in and organize regional technical meetings, workshops and conferences on food security, price, market and trade issues, including
preparation of background documents and reporting related results;
? In the context of the FAO-GIEWS and FAO-FIVIMS programme objectives, develop and/or apply methods and techniques for food security and
vulnerability analysis and price, market and trade analysis, providing technical support for the establishment or strengthening of food security
and market information systems and food policy analysis;
? Participate in and/or organize field missions, seminars, and workshops to support the above work in the region;
? Take the lead in coordinating FAO food security related work in the region with UN organization and other stakeholders in the Near East
Contribute to technical servicing of FAO regional statutory bodies, including the regional conference and other relevant regional fora, as
needed;
? Represent FAO at official and working level meetings related to food security and trade issues;
? Perform other related duties as required.
