ILRI vacancy: Director of Human Resources (open till filled)

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Duration: 3 years
ILRI seeks a dynamic, innovative Director of Human Resources (HR) to lead the transformation of HR-related strategies, policies, systems and practices. The incumbent will manage the HR team located in Nairobi and Addis Ababa and will report to the Director General. S/he is also expected to work closely with the HR unit of ICRAF (World Agroforestry Centre, www.icraf.org), a sister organization, also headquartered in Nairobi as well as with other CGIAR centres, especially those ILRI is hosting or is being hosted by.
Specific Duties will include:

  • Overseeing the HR functions which include; HR strategy, design and implementation; HR planning; recruitment; compensation management including job classification, performance management; learning and development; employee relations and staff welfare; personnel administration and legal HR matters and general compliance;
  • Participates in the overall management of the institute as a member of the senior management team and advise on people and change management;
  • Responsible for the development and update of an HR Strategy that fully supports the implementation of the overall ILRI strategy, promoting the ILRI core values in response to external trends and developments;
  • Leading the development, review and evaluation of all HR Management policies, systems and practices throughout the Institute that reflect state-of-the -art HRM practice including best practice in gender and diversity, and in line with all legal, donor and CGIAR requirements;
  • Ensuring that the HR Information system provides managers and employees timely and accurate information;
  • Leads and manages the HR team so that it can provide expert, customer-oriented services;
  • Ensures that processes and services within the HR function are efficient and effective
  • Manages the institute’s HR budget.

Location: The position is located at ILRI-Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya but requires frequent travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as well as occasional travel to other ILRI locations.
The successful candidate will have:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent, preferably in human resources management, business management, industrial relations or related studies and experience with a research organization, a biotech company or a consulting firm (as an HR leader) as well as experience in international HR Management  and/or the non-profit sector;
  • A track record of successful transformation of the HR function in an organization is an asset and record of initiating and implementing multiple projects;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a HR strategic plan, translate it into operational plans and implement them successfully;
  • Proven team building and HR unit management skills with ability to respond effectively to sensitive, complex or controversial queries or issues;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, including presentations to staff, management and the Board;
  • Creativity and innovativeness, particularly in developing policies, solving problems and making decisions;
  • Strong relationship-building and work-management/organizational skills with demonstrated ability to establish credibility throughout the organization through strong communication skills, HR expertise and a good understanding of the business of the organization;
  • Understanding of current best practices in HR management, especially as they apply to knowledge organizations;
  • Past involvement in Gender and Diversity matters is an added advantage.

Terms of appointment: Initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
